Bioenergetic Sensitivity and Enzyme Therapy
January 1 2000 Ellen W. Cutler

As we enter the new millennium, many have already begun to explore the depths of energetic medicine and therapy. I have spent many years engrossed in this exploration, and have created the system BioSET, which works on the energetic level, both diagnosti- cally and therapeutically. The true ingredient in chiropractic philosophy is the idea that there is an innate or universal energy that maintains our health and restores our well being and vitality. So, not unlike the true basis of chiropractic philosophy, BioSET represents the true depiction of human beings as energetic beings which respond, physically and emotionally, energetically. Disease begins on an energetic realm, and healing must begin on this level as well. Coming from a very scientific and conventional background, energetic medicine, when first introduced to me, was way beyond my understanding. I was unable to understand or grasp the concept. It was abstract, and I couldn't touch it or feel it. In fact, I highly disfavored it. But, a good friend of mine, an acupuncturist, recommended some reading materials, of which I was in awe. So I read on and on and sought to study with some "masters" of energetic healing and diagnosis. I became hooked and realized we, as energetic bodies, live and breathe as such; and blockages or kinks in these energetic patterns may cause disease or ill health. This has come to be called functional medicine. Functional medicine sees origins of disorders in the functional realm, instead of the more traditional realm. That is, there are no underlying anatomical lesions, such as tumors or infections, and no biochemical lesions, such as inherited missing enzymes. Altered function is the primary or basic pathology, and may extend to the many systems, organs, and tissues of the body. For example, it may affect the digestive system, causing malab-sorption and weight gain; or it may extend the immune system, causing autoimmune activity resulting in pain and disability. It can even extend to the emotional system, creating depression, anxiety and fatigue. BioSET is based on functional medicine and this paradigm. Therefore BioSET can inevitably affect many areas of health, whether they be digestion, or headaches, or severe menopausal symptoms. Functional medicine can detect disorders before they become diseases, before they can only be surgically removed, and before dependence on drug therapy. Breakthrough BioSET Method The breakthrough BioSET method perceives the body as an organism through which electromagnetic energy flows along invisible pathways called meridians or channels. These are the same pathways that Qi (life-energy) flow through in Chinese Medicine. According to Chinese medicine, the electromagnetic energy in our bodies manifests in lines of force that run near the body's surface, then pass into the internal living structures that are our organs. These lines of force, Qi, or electromagnetic energy currents, are called meridians or channels. The energy conducted through our acupuncture meridians can be measured and recorded in different organs of the body. I have seen, in my clinical practice over 22 years, that, when either allergens, toxins, or toxic metabolites from poor digestion come in contact with the body, a blockage occurs in the energy field of the person. This blockage, for example in specific reference to allergies, sets off a chain reaction in the body. First, the brain makes a concerted effort to protect the body from a substance it perceives as harmful by identifying the allergen and alerting the immune system. The immune system responds by sending out antibodies to block the antigen from damaging the system. Technically this occurrence is called an antigen-antibody bond. This type of immune reaction (antigen-antibody link) causes the release of toxic substances from the cells into the blood stream. These toxic substances are immune mediators, such as histamine and cytokines, which cause tis- sue inflammation in the body. This is what commonly creates those swollen red eyes we see in an allergic response. These immune-mediated responses also cause blockages in the body's electromagnetic energy pathways. Whenever energy blockages occur in the body, health problems inevitably result. Various symptoms produced by such blockages are bodily aches and pains, sore throats, fevers, chills, painful lymph nodes, weakness, extreme fatigue, headaches, sleep disturbances, irritability, confusion, depression, forgetfulness, burning sensations in the body, frequent urination, crying spells, sores in the mouth, indigestion, bloating, water retention, and even suicidal behavior and death. But. virtually any symptom can be the result of a blockage caused by contact with an allergen. Symptoms vary depending on the electromagnetic pathway, or meridian (and its corresponding organ), in which the energy blockage occurs. For instance, if energy flow is blocked in the lung and large intestine meridian, the person may suffer severe respiratory distress, asthma, cold, sinus problems, constipation, or diarrhea. If the blockage is in the kidney meridian, the person may suffer water retention or frequent urination. A blockage in the energy flow of the gallbladder meridian may produce pain and swelling in the breast, pain in intercostal muscles, abdominal cramping, heavy menstrual bleeding, severe mood swings, aggressive behavior, or anger. Energy blockages in the heart meridians can cause heart palpitations, cardiac arrhythmia, insomnia, dry mouth, and heavy sensations in the chest, night sweats, fatigue, and insecurity. BioSET practitioners acknowledge this occurrence and are able to evaluate these allergy blockages through the use of bioenergetic testing. This testing is done via electrodermal computerized testing (BEST) or via the use of muscle testing. Muscle Testing in BioSET does not evaluate the power a muscle can produce. Rather, it evaluates how the nervous system that runs parallel to the electromagnetic pathways controls muscle function. So, if the muscle responds as weak, this is a sign of impact of the nervous system or electromagnetic pathways. The muscle testing used in the BioSET method is: arm at a right angle in front of you; either arm, palm down if sitting up: or palm towards your feet when lying down. This muscle testing is used to evaluate food, environmental, and airborne allergies, as well as organs of toxicity and areas of stressed enzyme deficiencies and dietary imbalance. BEST TECHNOLOGY The BEST (electrodermal computerized test) system technology rests on research originally conducted in the 1950s by Reinhold Voll, a German medical doctor with a significant background in electrical engineering. His studies showed conclusively that the acupuncture points used for millennia by Chinese physicians were, in fact, more electrically active than the tissue around them. Using a sensitive electrical resistance meter, Voll not only identified the electrical specificity of acupuncture points, but also found more than 500 additional points not described in the classical literature. In traditional theory, acupuncture points are described as lying along pathways called meridians that correspond to major organs and systems in the body. Using this as a basis, Voll not only showed that acupuncture points were areas of increased electrical activity, but that those electrical characteristics changed based on stresses affecting the associated meridians and organs, exactly as described by the ancient medical texts in China. During almost four decades of research, Voll and his colleagues tested thousands of patients suffering from conventionally diagnosed diseases. Using his method of assessing electrical resistance at acupuncture points, Voll found that changes in the electrical activity of the meridians clearly reflected the pathology associated with individual disease states. Voll's observations confirmed the classical Chinese understanding that, for good or ill, changes in health show first in the meridian system, often long before pathology appears in the cells and tissues. By repeatedly surveying the meridians of patients over the course of their treatment periods, he was able to confirm that electrical characteristics at the points presented a powerful window to the state of functional health over time. Patients who were healing exhibited positive changes in the readings at the acupuncture points. Seriously ill patients who were failing showed electrical point signatures consistent with their degenerative states. In an article written for the American Journal of Acupuncture, Voll, with uncharacteristic brevity, described these huge discoveries as "acupuncture rendered measurable". In succeeding years, the technique came to be known as EAV (Electro-Acupuncture According To Voll), in order to differentiate it from already existing electro-acupuncture techniques that involved the stimulation of needles with electrical currents. Medicine Testing The next major development in EAV came about largely by accident. In the late 1950s, Voll began teaching EAV to other doctors. During one seminar, he tested a subject who showed an abnormal reading at the point associated with the prostate gland. After taking the readings, Voll called a break in the proceedings. When the group reassembled, Voll retested the point and found that it read as balanced. Since only a few minutes had passed, Voll asked the patient if he'd done anything during the break that might have altered his readings. The patient answered no, but did mention that one of the doctors in the class had handed him a homeopathic remedy for prostate and that the bottle was currently in his pocket. Voll had the patient remove the bottle from his pocket and place it on the table, out of contact with his body. He then retest-ed the prostate point, which had returned to the previous unbalanced level. Voll placed the bottle back in the patient's pocket, tested again, and found that the point, once again, showed a balanced reading. This discovery has been verified countless times since, and has probably had a more powerful effect on the development of EAV than any other. By providing a directly observable link between a remedy and an instantaneous observation of change in the energetic terrain, it paved the way for an entirely new combination of assessment procedures and therapeutic tools. Throughout the succeeding years, many German doctors continued to work with EAV, and several new developments of Voll's ideas resulted by the mid-1980s. Research into EAV and computer technology had progressed far enough to enable the creation of a computerized EAV system. Physicists and engineers working with the Dermatron found that Voll's discovery of medicine testing were only the beginning of the phenomenon. Voll showed clearly that a substance placed close to the body could change the nature of the energy system. The new research showed that, through a complex digital linking process, the energetic signatures of substances could be encoded in a computer database that would produce the same changes at acupuncture points that the real substances did. This body of research resulted in the introduction in 1985 of the Interro System, which represented a quantum leap beyond existing bioenergetic testing technology. The inclusion of a computer database eliminated the need to have actual samples of test substances in the circuit and allowed testing of hundreds of items in a fraction of the time that had previously been required. In the time since, several generations of computerized systems have followed each building on the ever increasing understanding of bioenergetic medicine and the rapid evolution of computer technology. The BEST system is the latest in that line. It combines the most powerful features shared by the leading systems of the last generation. MERIDIAN BALANCING AND DETOXIFICATION Toxicity is an important aspect of the BioSET method. Toxicity is a problem. The body is bombarded by fast food diets, with toxic food additives and chemicals, prescription drugs, and toxic chemicals. The body has a certain capacity to detoxify itself; but, when this is exceeded, toxins deposit both within and around the cells, causing a wide variety of health problems. The symptoms of toxicity may take years to manifest after initial exposure, making it difficult for one to discern where the source of the symptoms arises. These can definitely mimic allergy reactions, and cause blockages in our electromagnetic pathways. Low-level toxicity from many sources can be very difficult—if not impos-sible-to detect. But, when the combination of sources of different toxins overwhelm the individual, the immune system is compromised, making one more susceptible to chronic illnesses. One's tolerance and susceptibility, in turn, can be influenced by his/her current overall state of health, emotional state, and possible inherited constitutional/genetic weakness. One's emotions and thoughts can be a factor in determining the overall load phenomenon (refer to my books, Winning the War Against Asthma and Allergies and Winning the War Against Immune Disorders and Allergies to leam more about load phenomenon). Upon exposure to a toxin, the body attempts to eliminate the toxin while still maintaining its ability to function. A body in sufficient homeostasis has a strong capacity to accomplish this efficiently. However, when one is physically or emotionally overloaded, the ability to eliminate toxic substances can decrease drastically, resulting in accumulation of toxins, consequently weakening the immune system. So, in order to fully benefit from a health system, detoxification must be a major preliminary step, which BioSET accomplishes. The muscle testing, or BEST testing, evaluates meridian imbalances and then utilizes certain homeopathic remedies, depending upon organ specificity, for proper drainage and detoxi-Continued on page 17... ...from page 15 fication. Competent digestion is paramount in the area of detoxification. Each of the detoxification processes of the liver, especially Phase 1. involves enzymatic support; proper digestion does not deplete the enzyme reserves important for these metabolic processes. When foods, such as protein, are not digested properly, our metabolic enzymes are utilized to digest, rather than support, detoxification. This can lead to autoimmune and other chronic diseases. ENZYME THERAPY Enzyme therapy and the evaluation of digestive stress is an essential ingredient in the BioSET method of therapy. Enzymes can save peoples' lives by restoring energy and homeostasis, reversing the aging process, turning a dysfunctional digestive system into a healthy one, and strengthening the immune system. In my fifteen years of working with enzyme therapy. 1 have witnessed enormous success with a variety of illnesses, such as chronic fatigue, depression, allergies and arthritis. Enzymes enable our bodies to digest the food we eat. They break down the various foods we consume-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins-into smaller compounds that the body can absorb. They are absolutely essential in maintaining optimal health. Enzymes are present naturally in raw foods, but are destroyed in the cooking process. It is important to eat as much raw food as possible, to subject food to as little heating as possible, and to chew food well, because enzyme production begins in the mouth. Because we often fail to follow these guidelines, we do not receive all the enzymes we need to do the job of digestion. Enzyme supplements provide the missing pieces. Maintaining the body's enzyme levels is critical today, when so much of the food in a typical American diet is processed or cooked—as much as 85%, according to recent studies. Therefore, supplementing with enzymes is crucial to achieving a more efficient digestive process and better utilization of our food's nutrients. When digestion is not properly completed, partially digested proteins putrefy, partially digested carbohydrates ferment, partially digested fats turn rancid, and these toxins remain in the body, hanning the system. Fermented toxins in the digestive tract can be absorbed into the blood and deposited as waste in the joints and other soft-tissue areas. Enzyme supplements help create more energy, promote faster and easier digestion, and encourage superior nutrient absorption. It is the responsibility of our digestive system to release the nutrients that are trapped in our food by breaking the food down. But our digestive system works best when enzyme supplements assist in setting the nutrients free for the body to absorb and use. Receiving all the nutrients in the food we eat is critical, since these nutrients are needed to build and repair the body's tissue, produce energy, and maintain a strong immune system. Through an enzyme examination, again utilizing either the muscle testing or the BEST machine, I am able to ascertain which foods a person cannot tolerate and which enzymes they need to supplement to restore homeostasis. With the proper enzyme supplements, these patients regain the ability to digest their food properly and thoroughly. According to Dr. Edward Howell, who researched the effect of enzymes for more than 50 years, it is extremely possible that every degenerative disease may have its origin in a raw food enzyme deficiency. In response to this research, enzyme advocate William E. Frazier, M.H.P, N.C., Continued on page 35... ...from page 17 remarked, "Not to realize that most, if not all, degenerative diseases are traceable to a common denominator, and that common denominator being the food that we eat for nourishment, is an insult to human intelligence." BioSET ALLERGY ELIMINATION TECHNIQUE The breakthrough allergy elimination aspect of the BioSET method treatment combines chiropractic manipulation, acupressure, and itself to permanently desensitize people to every kind of allergy. Clinical studies have proven it to be by far the most effective, easiest, fastest treatment for the elimination of allergies. BioSET practitioners use chiropractic spinal techniques to stimulate those points (often referred to as acupuncture points) connected to the meridians. If a blockage affects a certain organ, the practitioner stimulates acupuncture points along the spine connected to that organ through autonomic nerve impulses. For example, a wheat allergy causes a blockage in the lung meridian, and can result in breathing difficulties. To treat a wheat! allergy, a BioSET practitioner stimulates acupuncture points along the spine related to the lungs while the person holds a vial containing the allergen (in this case wheat). Soon after the treatment is completed, the person will no longer be sensitive to wheat. At present, it is still not known exactly why this procedure is so effective. After years as a BioSET practitioner, I have developed my own theories. I believe that by stimulating those areas, the electromagnetic repulsion to that allergen is eliminated, and a chemical or enzymatic change occurs in the body that neutralizes the immune mediators and interrupts that allergen-or antigen-antibody complex reaction. This clears the energy blockage for the area involved, in this case the lungs. Thus the body no longer identifies wheat as an allergen, and energy blockages no longer occur when the patient eats wheat. This desensitization process is not instantaneous. It takes two hours for energy to pass through each of the body's twelve meridians. Hence it takes twenty-four hours for the clearing of all the meridians. Consequently, the patient who receives an allergy elimination treatment should avoid contact with the allergen for twenty-four hours after treatment to ensure that the body is completely desensitized. Otherwise, the treatment may not work, or may only work temporarily. There is an additional reason to steer clear of the allergen for those 24 hours. During that waiting period, patients are hypersensitive to the allergen they have just been treated for, and may have stronger-than-usual reactions. I treated a patient named Karen for a severe sugar allergy. On her way home from my office, despite my warning, she inadvertently ate a hard sugar candy. She immediately felt faint, had to take a nap, and awoke with an excruciating headache and allergy symptoms far more severe than usual. When patients carefully comply with the 24-hour waiting period, however, they can generally eat the foods they have been allergic to the very next day, with no ill effects. From that point on, they are free to enjoy those foods without suffering allergic reactions of any kind. When a patient comes into my office for an initial appointment, whether they are suffering from colitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or just hay fever, I spend an hour-and-a-half evaluating the person's meridian imbalances, toxicity, enzyme deficiencies, dietary stress and, of course, allergies and sensitivities, using a Bioenergetics Stress Test device (EAV). (Again, this can be done using muscle testing). At the end of this first visit, they are given a homeopathic remedy for drainage and detoxification, enzymes for digestion and other metabolic deficiencies, a sugar, fat or protein intolerant diet and are scheduled for a series of treatments, based on my level one protocol for allergy elimination. The number of treatments depends upon the number of allergies the person has. When a patient comes in to be treated for an allergen such as milk (a common allergy), I first do an EAV test. If this test indicates an allergy or sensitivity to milk, I do a simple initial test to determine whether the patient's arm is strong enough for a muscle testing diagnosis. I then test various organs and glands through therapy localization, or palpation, to determine if the patient is able to completely clear this treatment. If I find an organ or gland that is blocked or weak with muscle testing, I use certain organ and gland allergen vials to combine with this milk-allergy elimination clearing. I then place a vial or reagent containing milk and organ or gland in the patient's hand and muscle-test the opposite arm. If the patient's arm muscle weakens, it confirms the original diagnosis from the EAV machine that this patient is allergic to milk. I then go on to check what parts of the body are being blocked in response to this allergy. I determine what areas are blocked by therapy localizing, palpating, or touching reflex areas on the abdomen, and chest (organs and glands). A strong indicator muscle will weaken in different areas that correspond to areas of blockage in the body. When the blockages have been identified, I stimulate points along the spine, thus stimulating the areas of the body where energy is blocked. The stimulation of these areas tends to balance the electromagnetic fields of the body in relation to the allergen. I then check to see whether the treatment has been successful by muscle-testing the patient once again. After 99.9 percent of these allergy elimination treatments, upon re-testing the patient's aim muscle, it no longer weakens in response to the allergen. If there is a weakness, there are more intricate aspects of the treatment that are employed using some nutritional or emotional methodology. If the muscle responses are now strong, I perform acupressure on specific points on the front side of the body (patients can choose to receive acupuncture). Acupressure or acupuncture at this time balances the meridians and secures the treatment. There is then a fifteen-minute rest period with the allergen in the hand. This completes the treatment for milk. After the milk-allergen vial is removed, the patients rub their hands in order to remove any possible remnant of the allergen. Immediately following the treatment, the process is complete, except for one crucial step. The person must avoid all contact with the allergen for the next twenty-four hours. This means not smelling, touching, ingesting, or even coming within four feet of the allergen. This can present difficulties. The patient must observe a special diet and take every precaution to avoid the offending substance. At the end of the twenty-four hour "quarantine," I re-test the patient for milk. If all the above conditions have been met, the patient will be de-sensitized from now on. His or her allergy to that particular substance will be a thing of the past! . , Case History Carla, age fifty, came to see me with a family history of osteoporosis and arthritis. Two years earlier, she had been screened for osteoporosis, and the results suggested she might have already developed the disease. She was advised to eat dairy products and take 1500 mg of calcium daily. After two years, she was tested again, and the results were even worse. She also complained of bloating and indigestion. Worried, upset and afraid, she came to me for a nutritional consultation. An enzyme evaluation, detoxification, 24-hour urinalysis, and complete allergy testing had been performed. The results showed that she was deficient in calcium, and sensitive or allergic to calcium and the dairy products she had been eating. After prescribing an enzyme for the digestion of sugars that would help ease the dairy allergy, I treated her with BioSET allergy elimination technique for calcium and dairy, and prescribed calcium supplements with her enzymes. In one year, her test results were significantly better. Her bloating and arthritis pain was diminished. I often wonder how many of the millions of women who take calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis and arthritis are sensitive to it. *J» Ellen Cutler, D.C., author of the best selling J alternative health books, Winning the War; Against Asthma and Allergies and Winning j the War Against Immune Disorders and Allergies, is the founder of the BioSET allergy elimination method: a new and revolution-ary healing process focused on building bodily strength and vitality.
