Improving Musculoskeletal Health by Leveraging Cell Mechano-Sensitivity

Copa Healthcare, is introducing the Marodyne LiV device to the chiropractic providers in the United States. The technology has over 30 years of research funded through NASA, NIH and other agencies. Numerous clinical publications about LIV are available in the areas of musculoskeletal health and rehabilitation in different conditions and age groups.

What is LIV? It is the whole-body acceleration of a person standing on the device within a range of 0.3 to 0.5g against gravity (where lg = 9.8 ms2). This is different to the whole-body vibration equipment currently in use that operate at higher g forces. LIV feels similar to a buzzing sensation, rather than a rigorous shaking. The device moves the user at 30 cycles per second with an acceleration of 0.4g. This level is maintained throughout the daily 10-minute session of use. The device continually adjusts its upward motion at a constant frequency, by measuring the loading pattern of the user standing on the device. The upward motion is created by a sound wave controlled by the software in the device.

The product can be used within functional or integrative medicine programs for bone and muscle wellness. It can also be useful within musculoskeletal rehabilitation of lower extremities and the trunk. The mechanical force output from the device is safe1 and well within the daily whole-body vibration limits set by ISO 2631.2

Professor Clinton Rubin, Director of Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University. “We are excited to collaborate with Copa to bring this technology to the clinic. These low magnitude mechanical signals mimic oscillations from muscle contraction, which are picked up by bone cells and their progenitors (mesenchymal stem cells) to stimulate formation pathways while suppressing adipogenic activity 3 ”

The Marodyne LiV device4 can be a helpful addition to the treatment options available to chiropractic providers. It can be used in your clinic. Also, your patients can buy it for use in their home. For more information go to www.marodyne.ns
