How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

What are you passionate about? If you haven't discovered your passion yet, there is a great book that I recommend for anyone feeling a little complacent in their current job, career, and even in life. The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson and Lou Aronica is worth the read. It will help you become acquainted with who you are and discover what really inspires you. Once you unearth what you're passionate about, the book guides and motivates you to use your skills, talents, and the fire from your passion to improve your business and career.
I hear so many people talk about how unhappy they are at work and, as it turns out, they make up the majority of American workers. Gallup's 2017 State of the American Workplace Executive Summary (GALLUP, 2017) is, quite frankly, depressing. The report states, "One-third of employees are what Gallup calls 'engaged' at work. They love their jobs and make their organization, and America, better every day. At the other end, 16% of employees are actively disengaged. They are miserable in the workplace and destroy what the most engaged employees build. The remaining 51% of employees are not engaged — they're just there..."
Was I passionate about my job, business, or chiropractic in the early days working for Dr. Foxworth? To be honest, not really, but I wasn't quite disengaged either. I loved my job and, with each passing day, watching the power of chiropractic was inspirational. Getting my first chiropractic adjustment changed the way I viewed chiropractic, but it was still just a job until I attended my first chiropractic convention. One hundred seventy-eight days (or five months and 25 days) from my first day working in chiropractic, I boarded a plane to Jacksonville, Florida to attend the FCA Spring Convention. The people I met, the classes I participated in, the stories I heard, and everything I absorbed those three days launched me on a journey that pulled me way outside of my comfort zone and changed my life.
Over the past decade, I've developed new skills, taken risks, made mistakes, and met incredible people, all because I found my passion and, ultimately, my purpose. There are days where I sit in my office running and creating reports that are far from inspiring. Most days, I have the opportunity to help others, dream big, and develop new things. Spend 15 minutes each day reading this book. Somewhere buried in those 260 pages, your real passion is waiting to be discovered. You may find ways to change your life and, more importantly, to positively impact the lives of others.
