Burnout is defined by the American Psychology Association (APA) as “physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion, accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes toward oneself and others.” Most people don’t realize they’re experiencing burnout until they become notably dysfunctional in their daily activities.
Both the terms burnout and hypoadrenia or adrenal fatigue are generally not recognized medically. Why? It is my observation as a practitioner, researcher, formulator, and manufacturer for over 40 years that medicine doesn’t usually recognize a health problem until a pharmaceutical is approved to treat it. Most drugs can cause or aggravate burnout over time. Remember, ED was never a recognized diagnosed condition until Viagra was discovered.
Since the late 1970s, we screened every patient for frank hypoadrenia by using Ragland’s blood pressure test, which is done by simply having the patient lay on their back and rest for about five minutes. Then take the BP reading and note the top or systolic number. Let’s say it’s 120. Then have the patient stand up while pumping the cuff or using an automated button and record the immediate standing BP. Normally the BP should go up about five points to prevent all the blood from circulating into our legs. The adrenals secrete the hormone that constricts the blood vessels to prevent this postural hypotension from happening, which is why people with hypoadrenia commonly feel lightheaded when standing up quickly. Dropping of the systolic BP indicates adrenal fatigue, and the more it drops, the greater the problem. I have experienced mild drops from five to 10 points and major drops of 30 to 50 points.
Frank hypoadrenia is a significantly growing problem. We observed in the 1980s that about 50% of our patients had notable drops with Ragland’s BP test. In the 1990s, it rose to about 60%. During the 2000s, it was 70%, and the 2010s, it was about 75%. People are burning out at an alarming rate. As chiropractors, we can do something about it and be rewarded for it.
The rushing demand for stimulating energy drinks, caffeine, alcohol, and drugs is providing a very short-term quick fix and a much more severe longer-term aggravation and chronic worsening of the problem. Nutritional support of certain nutrients like adrenal glandular extracts, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, and others help support but often don’t fully correct the problem.

2. Another changed from running 4 to 8 miles a day to only running 1 mile for a noticeable improvement.
3. Change from lifting weights every day for 1-2 hours to doing a yoga class for an hour.
I am not suggesting these changes for everyone. Your positive changes may be the opposite. The trend to overcoming burnout is positive changes. You can be overdoing it in certain areas of your life and underdoing it in other areas. Your Adrenals need rest from stress, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Rest is the beginning of restoration!
