INTERVIEW WITH DR. CAREY GIRGIS
DR. CAREY A. GIRGIS, chiropractic physician, earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri. He’s been in practice for 28 years and was the first chiropractic physician in Ohio to become nationally certified in nonsurgical spinal decompression through an accredited university, Parker University in Dallas, Texas. Additionally, he is certified in nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy through National University in Lombard, Illinois, and Life University in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Girgis is the vice president of the International Disc Education Association and a member of the International Advisory Board on Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression.
Dr. Girgis is a member of the Civil Air Patrol and is active in his local church. Dr. Girgis established two nonprofit organizations—Go to The World and Hands for Life - Westerville. Both have the goal of helping people around the world and at home through chiropractic, medical missions, microlending, student loans, and evangelism.
IN A PODCAST interview with The American Chiropractor (TAC), Dr. Carey Girgis (CG) shares his experience with the innovative technology behind the MicroLight 830 (ML830) smart laser.
Learn about the remarkable potential this noninvasive treatment has to help you get results with those hard to treat patients.
TAC: Why did you choose the MicroLight laser, and how did you come across it?
CG: We first discovered it about nine years ago when we met Mike Barbour, the founder and owner of MicroLight Corporation of America. Initially, I wasn’t so sure about cold lasers since I had tried lasers in the past, and the results didn’t convince me. However, when I tested the MicroLight 830, it had incredible results. I tested it on my wife because, after knee surgery, she had pain for a year and a half. When I used the MicroLight on her for two weeks, the pain improved greatly! As a result, now I have seven MicroLight lasers in my office.
TAC: Did you say you have seven? How did you go from one to seven?
CG: Actually, I have seven and a personal one that travels with me everywhere I go.
I was reluctant to take the first one, but Mike told me to just take it and try it for a month or two and send it back if I didn’t like it. No commitment. And well, you really can’t lose with an offer
like that. When I bought it, I was able to pay for it within three weeks. I started using it on my existing patients who had conditions that I couldn’t resolve. I used the laser and got amazing results. I kept getting more lasers, so patients don’t have to wait in line.
TAC: And why the MicroLight 830 in particular?
CG: Because it uses 830 nanometers! This is actually the most widely researched wavelength. It has the deepest penetrating light into the body. It goes about two inches deep, so it’s able to reach areas we normally couldn’t reach. That’s why I use it with disc herniations.
It enables the healing of the microtears and the walls of the disc. The advantage of the MicroLight laser, first of all, is how safe it is; as a class 3B cold laser, it does not create heat. With class 4 lasers, you have the danger of causing burns and hurting the patients.
TAC: What other conditions can be treated with this technology?
CG: Arthritis, disc herniation, disc bulging, knee pain, injuries, migraine headaches, neuropathy, shingles, muscle spasms, whiplash, sprains, strains, swelling, tendonitis, trigger points. I treat all those conditions and more! We treat neuropathy with great success. It doesn’t matter whether the source of neuropathy is diabetes, the leading cause of this condition, or other causes. When the cause is nerve root compression, I use the laser in combination with decompression to treat neuropathy with great success.
TAC: Can you direct us to some of the science behind this technology?
CG: MicroLight conducted a double-blind study with General Motors in 2002. In this study, employees with carpal tunnel syndrome were treated with the laser. The results of the study supported the FDA’s clearance in the same year, stating that, “This reduces inflammation and swelling for carpal tunnel syndrome.” And obviously, it applies to other conditions besides that.
The wavelength has 90 milliwatts of power of penetration. That allows it to penetrate deep into the body. The cold laser activates the mitochondria of the cell to stimulate the production of the ATP molecule to allow it to create healthy cells. The result is faster healing and minimal scarring. Obviously, if you reduce the inflammation, you reduce the pain.
TAC: What has your staff had to say?
CG: It is a real time-saver. My staff members love the MicroLight laser because they can walk away and do other things. It is basically hands-free. You can set it, leave it, and not worry about hurting the patients at all.
With MicroLight, we get great service. If you need any sort of repair, I can send it and get it back quickly at a fair price. If I request it, they will send me a loaner to work with until I get mine back.
TAC: What have your patients said?
CG: The patients love it. As a matter of fact, after we give them a protocol for how many sessions that they need, they sometimes come back asking for more! “Doc, could you use the laser on my TMJ?” I even tried it on fractured ribs, and it reduced the pain and inflammation and helped the bone. The results are evident. They feel the change in their body, and they keep requesting it. It’s not something that you’d hope will work. This actually works. The pain goes away. The swelling goes away. The inflammation goes away. I even used it on a patient with shingles, and it got rid of it. The pain went away after the first treatment. It was incredible.
