Dr. Anthony V. D’Antoni Authors Chapter for Gray’s Anatomy

Chicago – In a move forward for the profession, National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) graduate Dr. Anthony V. D’Antoni (DC ’03), received the honor of serving as author of the ankle and foot chapter of the new 41st edition of Gray’s Anatomy. The chapter appears in the British reference version, which is the unabridged and prestigious reference counterpart to the well-known student textbook edition.

d-antoniDr. D’Antoni credits the rigorous education he received from NUHS, especially in the anatomic sciences, as well as his experience as director of anatomy at a podiatric medicine program, for the necessary expertise in guiding the chapter’s comprehensive exploration of the ankle and foot.

“The chapter contained an excess of 25,000 words and was carefully scrutinized by the editor-in-chief, Dr. Susan Standring, a section editor and a team of ten full-time editors in London, England. These editors oversee the final content to ensure that the chapter was written from an evidence-based perspective,” says Dr. D’Antoni. “Since Gray’s Anatomy is the oldest medical text and has been in continuous publication for over 150 years, it actually predates chiropractic medicine.”

Dr. Anthony D’Antoni was a practicing microbiologist when he enrolled in National University’s doctor of chiropractic program in 1999, and already had a master’s degree. After earning his DC degree in 2003, he began a PhD program in health sciences where he specialized in medical education at the School of Health and Medical Sciences of Seton Hall University. “I have always been very interested in medical education, particularly in basic sciences and clinical anatomy,” says Dr. D’Antoni.

Dr. D’Antoni had taught college and graduate level sciences courses before, during and after his education at NUHS. He taught clinical anatomy and histology at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, New York City, and then spent five years as director of clinical anatomy at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, also in Harlem.

Currently, Dr. D’Antoni is clinical professor and director of anatomy at the CUNY School of Medicine (formerly Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education). At age 42, Dr. D’Antoni is currently one of the youngest anatomy course directors at any allopathic medical school in New York City.

grays-anatomy-41stHaving taught clinical anatomy and other basic sciences to DPM, DO, and MD students, Dr. D’Antoni is quick to point out that his knowledge of clinical anatomy, embryology, histology and other sciences came from his studies at NUHS. “My PhD was in health sciences and not anatomy, so I could not do what I do today without the education I received from National,” he says. “The morphological sciences are such an important part of chiropractic education. At NUHS especially, the anatomy program is extremely demanding and thorough. And it’s my anatomy education from NUHS that brought me to where I am today.”

Dr. D’Antoni has published numerous research papers and is known for mentoring many students in anatomical research. He currently has 12 BS/MD students working in his laboratory that emphasizes clinical and reverse translational anatomic research at the CUNY School of Medicine. In addition to his work on Gray’s Anatomy, Dr. D’Antoni is also on the editorial board of the journal Translational Research in Anatomy, as well as the editorial board of Clinical Anatomy, the official journal of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

“We are proud of Dr. Anthony D’Antoni for reaching this milestone on behalf of his profession. The fact that one of our graduates would qualify as an author for Gray’s Anatomy and build a career teaching anatomy in medical schools based on his education here, is indisputable evidence of the quality of education we offer,” says NUHS President Joseph Stiefel. “Dr. D’Antoni is not only proving himself a leader for our profession in academia and research, but also in building respect for chiropractic medicine among other medical specialties around the world.”

voight-CXL“Rehab is only as good as your assessment,” stated Dr. Phil Page, Global Director of Research and Education for Performance Health. “Understanding a patient’s quality of movement and pain is essential for developing an effective treatment of exercise, which is why this educational partnership makes perfect sense. Akron, Ohio – September 9, 2015 – Lance Armstrong, DC, was presented the 2015 Performance Health and Florida Chiropractic Association Humanitarian Award at the 2015 FCA National Convention & Expo held in Orlando, Florida in August.

FCA Humanitarian AwardPerformance Health, manufacturer and marketer of Biofreeze®, Bon Vital’®, TheraBand, Cramer® and Thera°Pearl® health and wellness products, annually partners with the FCA to honor individuals who go above and beyond for their community in the spirit of giving back and making a difference in a humanitarian effort.

“I am grateful to the FCA for their work in protecting their members, educating the public and advocating to legislators. This is a wonderful profession because of the service-minded people it attracts and the good that you collectively achieve,” stated Marshall Dahneke, Chief Executive Officer, Performance Heath. Mr. Dahneke had the pleasure of presenting the award to Dr. Armstrong.

“At first blush, not all may equate being a humanitarian with service in the Armed Forces, or serving those who serve us” continued Mr. Dahneke. “Yet I am so pleased that the FCA has chosen to recognize both; Dr. Armstrong is a veteran dedicated to serving active duty service members. He has given unselfishly and worked tirelessly to promote the Chiropractic profession and the Chiropractic promise; and by his example, he encourages and inspires us to do the same.”

Veteran Lance Armstrong received degrees from Brevard Community College, the University of Central Florida and Palmer College in Iowa. He has been recognized as the FCA’s Chiropractor of the Year, served as the FCA’s president and lives and practices in the Cocoa Beach area. He has distinguished himself by caring for and serving active duty personnel at Patrick Air Force Base. In addition to supporting those is active duty, he has demonstrated years of service to supporting veterans in need through the Stand Down intervention program, designed as outreach to homeless veterans. Dr. Armstrong also recognized the important work and impact of the Patriot Project. He is now the Patriot Project Director of Florida, which currently has 50 doctors providing care throughout the state.

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Armstrong said, “I am very humbled to receive this award, and I thank Performance Health for the donation to Patriot Project. To have Marshall Dahneke say such kind words in front of my peers was truly moving to the soul. Then to have Patriot Project founder Dr. Tim Novelli and key note speaker SSgt Shilo Harris (USA) also speak on my behalf was enough to test all cardiac muscle electrical conductivity.

“Please know how honored I am to be a Palmer College PO Adjunct Professor and the opportunity it provides to take interns to Stand Downs to assist homeless Veterans. I am also honored to be an FCA member and remain forever grateful to the FCA staff and its board of directors for all their accomplishments. I remain hopeful that one day all military and VA hospitals globally will have at least two DC’s on staff,” concluded Dr. Armstrong.

“Dr. Armstrong continues to serve his country, his community and his profession in an outstanding way through the Patriot Project. He has engaged dozens of chiropractic students in the Stand Down program by showing them how they can reach out and improve lives even beyond the large circle of patients they will help in their professional careers,” added Debbie Brown, CEO, FCA. “Dr. Armstrong wants the best quality of life for America’s active military and veterans and has made a real difference through his determined service. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Performance Health in presenting this award to one so deserving.”

ChiroHealthUSA Announces $10,000 Chiropractic Scholarship

Flowood, Mississippi—September 1, 2015This weekend at The National Convention and Expo, ChiroHealthUSA announced The Foxworth Family Scholarship in honor of President Dr. Ray Foxworth’s parents, Drs. Betty Pace Mathews and Charles Vernon Mathews. ChiroHealthUSA will award $10,000 to one chiropractic student each year and an additional $10,000 donation to the winning student’s chiropractic college.

Dr. Betty Pace Mathews worked as a CA for a local chiropractor before she was accepted into Chiropractic College. She worked as a vet tech by day and attended chiropractic school at night with an 8-year old Ray Foxworth sitting beside her. After graduation, she opened her practice in a small town in a state where chiropractic was not insured or even licensed yet.

Dr. Betty Mathews was clearly an inspiration, but the desire to learn and the unwavering support of his father, Dr. Charles Mathews, has had a lasting impact on his son, too.  In fact, when Dr. Foxworth graduated from Chiropractic College in 1985 and sat for the National Boards, his father was right beside him taking and passing the Boards despite not being in Chiropractic College for many years.

As a second-generation chiropractor, Dr. Foxworth did not originally plan to follow in his parent’s footsteps. Attending a state chiropractic convention in 1980, he heard his now long-time friend Dr. Sig Miller speak and it changed the course of his life. He packed up his young family, headed to Cleveland Chiropractic College, and never looked back. Over the next 30 years, he would be appointed by two governors to serve 12 years as the first chiropractor on the Mississippi State Board of Health, two of those years as chairman. He was given the opportunity to start the first chiropractic program in a Mississippi VA hospital and later became the founder and president of ChiroHealthUSA.

“It is important for me to give back to a profession that has meant so much to me and my family, not only as tribute to my parents, but as an opportunity for chiropractic students to follow in their footsteps,” Foxworth said.

Students may begin submitting applications immediately. The deadline for submissions is February 29, 2016. Winner notifications will go out on or before June 1, 2016, and the winner will be announced during The National Convention in Orlando in August of 2016.  Learn more at www.chusascholar.com.

“We all belong to chiropractic,” said Foxworth, “and we all need to help, invest, and support the advancement of our profession.”

Founded in 2007, ChiroHealthUSA is a simple, compliant and profitable way for chiropractors to offer affordable care to their patients.
