Petition to Save Chiropractic Subsidies CANADA: I lie iniropractie Association 01 aasKatcn-ewan is leaving no stone unturned to save the subsidies that fund their practice. If the subsidies lapse, chiropractors fear that they will lose a number of patients. To make their grievances known, and in an attempt to save the subsidies, the Chiropractic Association of Saskatchewan has presented a petition with signatures of 20,000 supporters to NDP Health Critic Judy Junor. Health Minister Don McMorris said that Saskatchewan is the only province that heavily subsidizes chiropractic services, while the other nine provinces do not. He also added, "Chiropractic service is one service that isn't covered under the Canada Health Act. It's a non-insured, subsidized service." While the chiropractors and Health Ministry battle out their differences, the general public is apprehensive and disconcerted. If the subsidies are lost, patients would need to pay heavily to avail chiropractic services. Under the present Government subsidy scheme, the Government covers SI2.25 per chiropractic visit while the patient pays $17. If the subsidy is done away with, patients will have to shell out $35 per treatment. However, McMorris opines that there are many health care services which aren't subsidized. Dentists, physiotherapists and optometrists all continue offering their services and patients persist in availing these. Calling themselves the Sustainable NPCO Runner's, this unique group of engineers, architects and supporters of chiropractic are all working together to develop, raise funds and ultimately build a self-sustainable "green" chiropractic clinic in Santo Domingo. Dominican Republic, for Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization. "The idea of providing chiropractic healthcare through a self-sustaining, environmentally friendly 'green' clinic to impoverished communities is not only a very possible goal to achieve with today's technology but, in these communities, a necessity because of the constant power outages and lack of clean water. It is extremely important that we are able to have a clinic which is self-sustaining and has a reliable source of energy and clean water that will enable us to provide the best healthcare possible. Through these projects, we can also provide education on how local residents can improve their own environments. This way we are providing a full circle of health in their body and their communities," explained NPCO President Joshua Heines. Team NPCO members running in support of this ' ~ project will assist in raising money, reaching out to green, eco-friendly related corporations, acquiring donated green equipment and ultimately work abroad to develop the clinic. The Sustainable NPCO Runner s team is currently recruiting runners and raising funds. Douglas Nagel of suburban Washington was arrested after a co-defendant claimed he supplied the controlled substances to the sports squads, according to Florida officials who began the investigation. An affidavit by Richard Thomas, a Florida-based associate of Nagel who pleaded guilty to possessing steroids with the intent to sell last year, said Nagel had been supplying performance-enhancing drugs to members of the clubs. Testosterone and Nandralone were among the steroids Thomas said he supplied to Nagel, who Thomas claimed boasted about his supplying steroids to members of the Major League Baseball and National Hockey League clubs in his area. Florida police said they had no evidence that athletes received performance-enhancing drugs. Nagel called himself a team chiropractor for the Capitals, a claim the NHL club refuted in a statement reacting to the news of Nagel's arrest, saving that Nagel is in no way affiliated with the Capitals. "Dr. Nagel's office, however, has seen some of our players for standard, routine chiropractic services," the Capitals said in the statement. "The Washington Capitals are not the target of this investigation, and there is no evidence that steroids were provided to any Capitals players. "This has been a thorough investigation and we are satisfied that law enforcement, the NHL and our own internal investigation have not led to any link of steroid use by Capitals players." No Capitals player has tested positive for steroids in the independent random testing program used by the NHL. The team said it has cooperated fully with police in the investigation since it was first contacted last September. The Nationals finished with Major League Baseball's worst record last season while the Capitals have this season's top National Hockey League record.
