Dr. Jolin Mayer. Lincoln Endowed Chair of Bioniechanical & Chi­ropractic Research at tic UnKcrsity of South Florida his been aw aided a Department of Homeland Security. FEMA Assistance of Firefighters Grant totaling $1,332,106. including a 5% extramural match from die Florida Chiropractic Research Foundation. This grant is tlic largest single commitment from FEMA"s Assistance of Firefighters Grants. Fire Prevention and Safety research program specifically aimed at interventions forback injury prevention Tlie 3-yearproject ispliase 3 of Dr. Maycr"s on-going FEMA-fundcd research initiative on prc\ cnting low back injury and illness in firefight­ers. Pliase 1 of this initiative demonstrated a link between poor back muscular fitness and low back pain in firefighters. Pliase 2 demonstrated tliat a work-site exercise intervention is safe and effective in improving back and core muscular endurance in firefighters. Pliase 3. tlic current study, will assess tlie clinical effectiveness of supervised and web-base exercises interventions performed over 12 months on preventing low back injury and illness in firefighters. Tlic primary goal of tlic Assistance to FircfiglUcrs Grant (AFG) is to meet tlie fircfighting and emergency response needs of tlic fire depart­ment and nonaffiliatcd medical sen ice organizations. For tlic current study, tlie three largest fire departments in tlic Tampa Bay region of Florida will participate.
