Got Enough Energy to Heal?

Keith Giaquinto

Have your symptoms hit a plateau and they are not getting any better? Do you need more energy to get through your day? Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Do you want relief now?

Healing your body is about energy production at the cellular level. Without adequately digested carbohydrate, protein, and lipids, your cells can not produce energy as needed. Without energy, that cell, organ, or tissue cannot do its job, which can throw the rest of your body out of balance, perpetuating health challenges.

The body has a pecking order in which it prefers to get its energy. First, the body prefers to get energy from carbohydrates. When the carbohydrates are all used up, the body turns to protein for energy and then ultimately fat.1 This process during your ordinary day, with the rise and fall of your blood sugar, is natural. Your body will let you know when your blood sugar drops by producing a feeling of being hungry or "hangry" (hungry plus angry/irritable). Your body is telling you it is time to eat something. How many of us have ordinary days with minimal stress? If you consistently throw moderate to high

levels of stress into your days on a continual basis, your body will burn through your energy reserves much faster than normal. This makes you protein deficient at the cellular level and gives you symptoms such as:

• Watery mouth/nose/eyes

• Swelling in the hands or feet

• Cold hands or feet

• TMJ problems

• Menstrual cramps

• Bleeding gums

• Inability to tolerate exercise

Dr. Howard F. Loomis, Jr., author of The Enzyme Advantage: For Healthcare Providers and People Who Care About Their Health, says, "That is why

yet, it wants sugar, and

it wants it now!"1 Can

you relate to this sugar

So how do you go about correcting an energy deficiency so your body can heal? It could be as simple as eating more whole foods in a balanced diet, but more often than not, it is more complex than that. Where I start with everyone who comes into my office, regardless of their condition, is in the stress-management component.

Help your patients manage their stress better. The body's only way to combat stress is with more nutrition for energy production. Under chronic stress, you simply cannot put food in your mouth fast enough to keep up with the stress. This is why stress management is important.

Next comes the nutritional support for energy production. Eating a balanced diet is important. More important is making sure your body can digest and absorb the nutrition from the food you eat. This can be supported by thoroughly chewing your food and taking digestive enzymes.

Far too often, patients come to see me who eat very healthy foods and exercise consistently, but still struggle with health challenges. The reasons they struggle is because they don't manage their stress well, don't chew their food well, and don't take digestive enzymes. All of these steps need to be brought to the patient's awareness for them to heal. There are no magic bullets when it comes to healing.
