Checking a Newborn Never Gets Old

By Kim Thor, DC

Checking a newborn never gets old. Not only does a chiropractic adjustment benefit the baby’s health significantly, but it also fills up my cup as a chiropractor. I believe that a patient encounter is a bilateral exchange of energy, and when checking tiny babies, this becomes very apparent.

Hanging out with babies this little — two days old — slows me down and allows me an opportunity to better live in the moment, filled with appreciation for life and the healing power of chiropractic.

You see, it is possible for a baby to leave the chiropractor’s office and immediately be different. Sometimes, babies begin to instantly sleep longer. Some babies become obviously happier right away. Some mothers even report a more peaceful baby.

One of my favorite visits in my office is when the mother of a newborn returns for a follow-up visit. It is so encouraging when I enter a treatment room to see a well-rested mother. When it’s quite apparent, you can almost see more confidence in her posture. Sometimes, they even dress up or put on make-up. Then, when I ask about how the baby responded, I often hear, “It’s like I have a whole different baby!” Babies who would maybe normally scream for hours are calm. Babies who would wake often are now able to rest and heal.

Newborns are tiny beings who have just entered this world, and I am humbled to be of service to them. It is an honor to take care of their earthen vessels. There really is something to this chiropractic thing.
