Dear TAC: j With the demise of easy insurance dollars and the rise of anti-chiropractic managed care, the profession is being split into two camps. Those who choose to be in the mainstream. I Those who choose to remain alternative. The first group are building rehab practices, not unlike medical and occupational medicine facilities. They are becoming, roughly, indistinguishable from medical physical therapy. They charge high dollars for their multiple services, and collect much less than they charge. The other camp consists of real chiropractors, the old school types, although that does not refer to their age. They are offering alternatives to drugs and surgery, are very wholistic. and will not be put in the "muscu-loskeletal only" box. They will not suck up to MD-gatekeepers. and they retain the separate and distinct quality of chiropractic. These practitioners charge less, take what good insurance there is left, collect cash, and collect nearly all of what they charge. Hopefully this latter kind of D.C. can continue to thrive, or our profession will be absorbed into medicine just as the osteopaths have been. C. P.Amato. D.C.
