Looking to expand your expertise in prescribing nutritional supplementation for your patients? This issue, TAC offers you three very different, but very effective, nutritional, programs for your consideration. We've asked three experts to describe their unique \ approaches to testing and counseling, to give you an idea of what it takes to get started using their programs for patients who are "generally healthy". TAC: Please describe a "nutritional maintenance program" for your patients who are generally healthy. King: Homeopathy offers much to proactively build health. While nutrition works on a biochemical level, homeopathy works bioenergetically, correcting nerve interferences throughout the whole nervous system. Contemporary biofeed-back response tests, like AK, leg length and electro-acupuncture tests, work very well to confirm which homeopathic remedies an individual needs. King Bio offers the chiropractor formulas and information on constitutional enhancement and the correction of miasms. These products are designed to strengthen and correct the genetic weaknesses we have inherited as far back as 1000 years into our family trees. Homeopathy offers a deeper acting therapy to better address the roots of disease. Vickery: The Vickery Method nutritional maintenance program is deceptively simple. It requires only three supplements that deliver every nutrient known and unknown. They are (1) our patented Platinum Essential Amino Acids Plus and our trademarked Vickery Essential Amino Acids, (2) BioMulti Plus [ Biotics Re- search®] and (3) our Platinum Flax/Borage. Yanick: We, at Quantum Energy, have studied hundreds of plants and whole foods to find the specific blends that catalyze innate communication and healing. With university researchers reporting how over 97.5% of supplements are either toxic (irradiation, fumigation or contaminated with mold, pesticide/insecticide residues, even though they are organic or wildcrafted), ineffective or both, our clinical research lead to the development of Multi-Nutrafood Plus™. Over a decade of research went into observing the unique energy fields and nutrient content of whole foods and herbs. Then, after testing thousands of cases, we expertly blended these ingredients to provide an ideal nutritional maintenance program for patients who are generally healthy. Our goal: Optimal nourishment and daily fortification against stress. To accomplish this goal, a proprietary Histi-dine-GLA-Zinc Complex (an advanced complex of transporter and carrier nutrients) was included to boost the assimilation of vital nutrients and provide powerful nutritional compensation from the ravages of everyday stress. Daryl DeLuca, Vice-President ofBiotics Research Corporation, a leading manufacturer of specially designed nutritional products for nearly thirty years. In sidebars accompanying this article, Mr. DeLuca provides valuable infor- mation regarding other options available to the practitioner who is interested in implementing a nutritional component in his/her practice, what to look for when selecting a supplement manufacturer, and makes recommendations for handling potentially problematic cases. ESSENTIAL MICRONUTRIENTS SUPPLY IS DIET, ALONE, ENOUGH? DeLuca: An abundance of research clearly demonstrates that diet alone may not sufficiently supply all the essential micronutrients in amounts necessary for overall optimal health. Clearly the evidence supports the use of broad-spectrum, multi-nutrient supplementation, such as Bio-Multi Plus, for the majority of patients who walk into a chiropractor's office. Bio-Multi Plus is not a mega dose supplement, but, rather, supplies a wide array of important micronutrients in highly bioavailable forms and in reasonable levels. For example, lipid soluble nutrients including vitamins A, D, E and K are supplied in emulsified forms for improved uptake and utilization. Important trace minerals, including chromium, selenium, molybdenum and vanadium, are supplied via an exclusive phytochemically bound, whole food form. Bio-Multi Plus also supplies important synergists such as natural mixed carotenoids, bioflavonoids, specific amino acids, and antioxidant enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Cata-lase from an exclusive vegetable culture product base. Another dietary supplement that almost everyone walking through a doctor's door will benefit from is essential fatty acids (EFA's). Harry Eidenier, Jr., a man I have a great deal of respect for, often paraphrases George Goodheart, a man Harry respects and knows well. Harry credits Dr. Goodheart with suggesting that, if there is one thing everyone needs more of in their diet, it's unrefined oils. Why? Because Americans presently consume about 18% of the N-3 fatty acids available in diets a century ago. Polyunsaturated fatty acids perform many functions including maintaining healthy membrane integrity, and regulation of most physiologic functions, including inflammation, platelet aggregation, and pain. Scientists and researchers debate which is the best source of EFA's, but whether you recommend Flax Seed Oil, such as our cold pressed oil from organic flax seed, or a high quality fish oil such as our BioMega-3, your patients will likely benefit from their use. When it comes to making nutritional recommendations, I believe it's important for chiropractors to stay within their comfort zone. By that I mean, stay within your nutritional knowledge and skill level. You can provide a great benefit to your patients just by covering the basics, and enhance your practice as well. As you increase your nutritional knowledge, you can expand the scope of the nutritional component of your practice. ■ mques Frank J. King, Jr., N.D., D.C., is a nationally recognized researcher, author and lecturer on homeopathy. In addition, Dr. King is the founder and director of King Bio Pharmaceuticals, a registered homeopathic manufacturing company dedicated to completing chiropractic destiny with the marriage of homeopathy. Dr. King offers, complimentary to all doctors of chiropractic, his turnkey procedural system for the high volume practice called, The Chiropractic Enhancer system (CES). Brice Vickery, D. C, has predicated The Vickery Method (TVM) on the idea that amino acids are the building blocks of life and, thus, very important in manufacturing hormone strong immune system T-cells and antibodies, and in gene and cell repair. Also, since digestive enzymes are made from amino acids, if enough amino acids are not provided, enzyme production will diminish and digestive function can become progressively more impaired leading to disease. Since the early 1980 's, Dr. Vickery has been a pioneer in nutritional counseling as playing a crucial part in the body's healing process. Paul Yanick, Jr., Ph.D., N.D., C.N.C, CQM., is a world renowned expert and founder of Quantum Medicine. Dr. Yanick has developed and teaches Quantum Medicine protocols that are innovative clinical techniques for addressing causative factors in illness with effective solutions for treatment resistant clinical cases. He has published over 250 studies and written three books on Quantum Medicine and the Quantum Repatterning Technique (QRT), which provide specific tools for identifying precisely what is taking place in the weakened or disordered physiology associated with unresponsiveness of the immune and endocrine svstems. Multi-Nutrafood Plus™ by Quantum Energy, LLC, is an advanced and comprehensive nutritional maintenance formula that works to keep the body healthy—all systems in sync, with vitality and energy to spare—without risks or side effects. This is the first daily multiple researched and designed to balance all meridians, organs and systems, so innate healing is operating at its fullest potential! What are the time and financial investments required to study your method? King: King Bio offers the Chiropractic Enhancer System (CES) a turnkey training program for the broad scoped, high volume practice., This program can be read over in one evening and successfully applied the next day by DCs who have never used homeopathy. King Bio offers license renewal seminars leading to a homeopathic certification for those interested in advanced study. The complete CES training program is FREE to DCs with any test kit purchase from King Bio. Kits range from the simple top six products to the complete armamentarium of 119 products, at cost to the doctor. Vickery: The Vickery Method (TVM) requires the full time attention (thinking) of the doctor because, while he/she will follow a procedural outline, he may jump ahead or go back over findings in his testing. This is in contrast to the mechanical norm of this profession. It is, in fact, 90% evaluation and testing (diagnosis) and 10% correction. It is, in short, not "Stop and pop!" The goal is always "First cause!" The time required to learn depends greatly on the background of the practitioner. A doctor who just graduated from say, Sherman College, and a doctor who practiced only straight chiropractic for 40 years would be the same—an empty mold. It would take from two-to-three years to become competent, because they have to learn how to do kinesiology drawn from both Applied Kinesiology, Contact Reflex Analysis, and some from Clinical Kinesiology, as well as some basic EAV and homeopathic pathologic (Nosode) testing, besides the nutritional testing and relationships to postural deviations, the cause of subluxations. They usually have to learn or relearn basic nutrition and diet. There are sometimes physical limitations. We found that many doctors who were, themselves, sick had to get well ► HOW TO EFFECTIVELY INCORPORATE A NUTRITIONAL ASPECT INTO YOUR PRACTICE DeLuca: Should a chiropractor desire to implement a nutritional component into their practice beyond the basics, there are some relatively easy, low cost ways to get started. Paul Varnas, DC, and author of Practical Magic, Ending Fatigue and Restoring Health Naturally, lectures on how to effectively incorporate a nutritional aspect into your practice (Check out the time and place of his lectures at www.DoctorV.info), Mark Force, DC, has published a great book to help DCs get started, entitled Choosing Health. It covers everything from lifestyle modification to functional testing. It even includes a patient symptom evaluation that is very useful and easy to use. After getting started, should you find you have the desire to continue expanding your skill and knowledge in the nutritional field, there are a number of ways to do so. The Council on Nutrition has an educational program that can lead to a Diplomate in Nutrition. NTA (Nutritional Therapy Association) offers an extended program in nutrition and functional assessments that many find very valuable, easy to learn and easy to implement. There are other programs and techniques, such as Applied Kinesiology (AK) and Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA) that many DCs find very useful for assessing their clientele. In the case of AK, they offer a 100-hour certification program, and additional study can lead to Diplomate status. It is even possible to obtain a Masters in Nutrition online from an accredited school. And there are numerous weekend meetings on everything from evaluating blood tests to identifying and correcting digestive imbalances. ■ WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE DeLuca: We are talking about the patient who is thought to be "generally healthy." I'm sure that the DC or their CA has every patient fill out an evaluation form. It should include any supplements, over the counter preparations and prescription drugs the patient is taking; the information provided could indicate which supplement recommendations you should make. Suppose the patient is a woman of childbearing age, and she indicates on her evaluation form that she is taking oral contraceptives for birth control. It would be prudent to recommend she take a product such as B12-2000, which supplies vitamins B12, folic acid, and B6 as a pleasant tasting, easy to take lozenge. Why? Oral contraceptives supply hormones, which act by preventing ovulation. Unfortunately, they also have a negative impact on B12, folate and B6 status. There are two areas of concern. One relates to the potential for increased ho-mocysteine plasma concentration, which may negatively impact cardiac health. The other, and probably more important to the patient, is in the case of pregnancy, the increased risk of neural tube defects. For women taking birth control pills, there are two likely outcomes. At some point they may get pregnant anyway (recent evidence suggests up to an 8% failure rate for oral contraceptive use over time). The other likely event is, they will stop taking the pill in order to get pregnant. Whether the pregnancy is planned or not, folate depletion due to oral contraceptive use, may increase the risk of neural tube defects. Supplementation simply makes sense in order to reduce the risk. ■ to practice TVM. They were what are sometimes called "sappers", who had such energy lack that they drained the patient and were incapable of testing anyone! The physical requirement is to be able to perform a minimum of 250 tests— up to a thousand a day. When developing the method and cutting through the "smoke" that is Applied Kinesiology, I did 2500 tests a day. We had a young associate who had a background in Applied Kinesiology and was an honor roll student—he had it in about 6-8 months, but it was a year before he was competent enough to alternate treatment with me on the same patients with perfect reliability. We have a doctor who just started, with an AK, CRA, and acupuncture, etc., background—and THE DESIRE—who, I believe, will do it in six months. Not exactly stop-and-pop. What we develop, then, are what we were intended to be: The greatest prevention doctors on the planet, integrating structure, nutrition and mind into a perfect wellness practice. Everything, everything that is learned is used on Monday morning! (And every hour after that!) The whole basic method is on four video tapes at DoctorVickery.com, 24/7, $75.00 each—total cost is $300.00! This is what we used to charge for one seminar! It's a good investment. From time to time, we do "hands on seminars" for the finer diagnosis of the conditions that make up fibromyalgia. Yanick: In one QRT (Quantum Repat-terning Technique) seminar day (7 hours), practitioners can go right into their office the very next day and apply the technique with reasonably good skill. The cost is $ 199 with pre-registration, or $250 late registration. Seminars are held once every two months at locations across the USA. What is the time required to perform this method for testing nutritional deficiencies? King: Initial testing and explanations may take ten-to-fifteen minutes. Follow-up testing may take one-to-three minutes. Vickery: Our standing tests for protein and sulfur deficiencies take about twenty-to-thirty seconds. Supine, on the Vickery-Voll Points, requires about the same. An acute IV disk case and the appropriate nutritional tests take two-five minutes (unless there are five or more diskal ► PAIN AND INFLAMMATION FROM TRAUMA OR OVEREXERTION DeLuca: Obviously, many patients who visit a DC are experiencing pain and inflammation from a trauma or overexertion of some kind. For them, recommending a proteolytic enzyme product such as Intenzyme Forte would be prudent. Proteolytic enzymes have been well studied and are known to reduce inflammation and support the healing process. Every DC has experienced patients who walk into their office and are "too hot" to work with. With these patients, put them on Intenzyme Forte for two or three days, then have them come back. It will make all the difference in the world. In an acute situation, the trick is to begin supplementation as soon as possible following an incident. The enzymes should be taken on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours following meals. Intenzyme Forte is a flagship product of Biotics Research and has been used clinically with great success by DCs, MD's, DO's and DDS's for nearly thirty years. ■ lesions with the CCT). A complete fibromyalgia workup including all nutritional deficiencies, BEV Tests for diskal lesions, osteoporosis, organ deterioration (such as Crohn's Disease, liver cirrhosis, yeasts, bacteria, viral series-hepatitis ABC, herpes, etc.), toxic metals series, lymphadenitis, and recording the starting, benchmark level of each may take up to forty-five minutes. On subsequent visits, the time gets shorter and shorter as the conditions clear up—less to test, as the patient gets well. Yanick: The method started out a decade ago taking 30-45 minutes per patient and is now streamlined and shortened into a 5-10 minute clinical assessment procedure that has as much accuracy of detailed meridian stress assessment or EAV and a full kinesiological workup. What type patients or cases respond best to this method? King: Homeopathy offers the broadest therapeutic spectrum of any adjunct for almost any physical, mental or emotional condition. Vickery: In the process of inventing and developing TVM, and by it's own usage, it should be recalled that two important discoveries were made that propel this method into universal application both in recovering health and maintaining health, which has been proven to be synonymous with maximum posture. The first was the Vickery-Voll Test, which uses the acupuncture points on the pancreas meridian designated as protein, carbohydrate, and fat digestion which responds to the proper amino acid formula. The second was the protein paradox. No matter how much protein is ingested, 90% of the population does not utilize it properly and the result is slow degeneration and disease. The outstanding evidence of this is the slow onset of DDD, as shown exclusively by The BEV Tests (DoctorVidceryxom). The tests are positive years before the CT or MRI. Fibromyalgia has become a showcase for TVM, because it has identified the causes, presents with one or more medically incurable diseases, contains all of the prior problems including infections, toxic metals and hydrocarbons, etc. We will just list some of the majors: At the start protein/sulfur deficiency, hypogly-cemia, depression, brain fog, chronic fatigue, yeasts, bacterial infections, viral in- fections, (including HVC), lupus, irritable bowel, interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, migraine headaches, TMJ, bursitis, severe muscular pain, lymphadenitis, mercury-lead-arsenic-cadmium, etc., gastric reflux, liver cirrhosis, osteoporosis, PMS, multiple vitamin-mineral-fatty acid deficiencies, Crohn's Disease, celiac disease, DDD in all stages, hopelessness, and suicidal tendencies. All have responded successfully to The Vickery Fibromyalgia Protocol. Yanick: Patients that respond best to QRT are those with treatment-resistant syndromes, stubborn and complex multi-leveled disorders such as fibromylagia, joint and muscle pain disorders, CFS, MS, Parkinson's, plus immune dysfunction, especially with weakness of cell-mediated immunity and its resultant chemical sensitivity and allergic tendencies. Remember, that the QRT, unlike other methods is multidisciplinary, involving immunology, endocrinology (I certified doctors for the A4M in Anti-aging Medicine and taught endocrinology during training), biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, quantum physics, molecular biology, naturopathic medicine, American Indian herbology, Ayurveda, German phytotherapy, functional medicine, neurology (I studied neurology at Baylor University in 1975), homeopathic medicine, and chiropractic. The system was built on failure and developed to help the most difficult cases. My life was on the line in 1970 with a medical diagnosis of fatal kidney and adrenal disease and that is when the multidisciplinary studies started. We at TAC would like to thank the four authors who contributed to this, the first of many articles to come, on how you can effectively implement a nutritional supplementation program in your practice. To paraphrase Daryl DeLuca. how far you choose to go with your nutritional skill and knowledge is up to you. Contact Dr. Paul Yanick at drptiiil(arjiuatitumeiierg)'ceuler.caiii or visit WKWsquanlumenergy.cojn. WHY SHOULD YOUR PATIENTS OBTAIN THEIR SUPPLEMENTS FROM YOU? De Luca: The truth is, most patients are already taking supplements of one kind or another; they're just not getting them from you. They could be selecting a poorly formulated product from the bargain discount shelf of the local grocery or drug store, or paying too much for too little from some multi-level company. The ugly truth is, a great many of the dietary products in the marketplace are of poor quality and often times don't even meet their label claim. A recently published study conducted by the School of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland looked at 32 bottles of chondroitin sulfate products purchased at pharmacies and health food stores. Only two of the products met label claims! And it gets worse. Of the 32, 14 contained 10% or less of the label claim. Chiropractors are in a position to perform some due diligence on supplement manufacturers on behalf of their patients, and recommend products manufactured by companies they deem reputable using quality ingredients, under strict quality control guidelines. How do they do this? By asking some basic questions, such as, "Does the company actually manufacture their products?" Only the manufacturer is in a position to monitor and control all the manufacturing processes from raw material selection and validation, to the monitoring of all in-process functions and testing, to the testing of finished products. All of these tasks must be performed in order to assure the safety, purity and effectiveness of the dietary products you recommend. If a supplier relies on contract manufacturers, they are at the contractor's mercy. Contract manufactures compete on price. Every penny they can save improves their bottom line. For example, suppose a supplier, let's call them Biocopycat Company (the names are changed to protect the guilty), wants to copy a proven product manufactured by a competitor. They approach ACME We Make'm Cheap Contract Vitamin Maker, and perhaps a few more contract producers, show them the label of the product they want copied, and asks for bids to provide the product. Is it not reasonable to assume that, just maybe, the manufacturers will source the least expensive supply of raw materials in order to provide the lowest bid? And even if Biocopycat Company had the inclination to do so, are they in the position to monitor all the aspects of the production process? Of course not. Another question to ask is, does the supplier maintain and staff a laboratory to test all raw materials, perform in-process testing, and test all finished products? They should, but most companies don't. Some companies rely on outside labs to test materials and finished products. While this is an improvement over what is being done by most companies, it's not ideal. How can they perform in-process testing? Do they stop the production process at various stages, send samples to the outside lab, and wait several days for the lab to provide the results of their testing before moving to the next step in the manufacturing process? Who is performing the validation testing for things such as the cleaning and sanitizing of the equipment? And finally, be sure the supplier encourages tours of their manufacturing and laboratory facilities while production operations are ongoing. Have them explain their quality control procedures to your satisfaction. If you aren't in a position to visit the facility, talk to a contemporary who has. In other words, kick the tires. ■ Dr. Frank J. King Dr. Brice Vickery Dr. Paul Yanick
