Address the Root Causes of Dysfunction with The Loomis System®
January 1 2025 Howard F. LoomisAddress the Root Causes of Dysfunction with The Loomis System®
January 1 2025 Howard F. LoomisFor over four decades, Dr. Howard F. Loomis Jr., DC, FIACA has dedicated his career to uncovering the critical, yet often overlooked, role that enzymes play in human health. Through his seminars at the Food Enzyme Institute, he offers health care practitioners a unique window into the intricate connection between digestion, enzyme activity, and overall physiological function. Dr. Loomis’ approach isn’t just another layer of nutritional advice—it’s a rethinking of how we understand the body’s capacity to heal, repair, and maintain balance.
Enzymes, as Dr. Loomis explains, are the real workers in the body. While vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates provide the necessary building blocks, they require enzymes to activate their potential. Without this essential component, nutrients are like raw materials sitting idle. Through his seminar series, Dr. Loomis shows health care practitioners how to recognize enzyme deficiencies in their patients, and more importantly, how to correct them.
At the heart of his teachings is a return to simplicity, guided by a deep understanding of physiology. He often reflects on his early years in practice, where conventional treatments for disc degeneration or protein assimilation left much to be desired. It was only when the concept of enzyme therapy entered his clinical work that he began to see lasting change in his patients’ conditions. His system doesn’t merely treat symptoms—it addresses the root causes of dysfunction, enabling health care practitioners to look deeper and provide more targeted care.
What makes Dr. Loomis’ seminars particularly valuable is their practical application. He bridges the gap between complex biochemical processes and real-world practice, offering health care practitioners a new way to think about patient health. Whether discussing how enzyme deficiencies can affect disc health, hormonal balance, or even sugar cravings, his insights are both profound and actionable.
Dr. Loomis’ method is not bound by fleeting trends in healthcare; rather, it’s built on enduring principles of how the body functions. With a focus on evidence-based research and decades of clinical experience, the Food Enzyme Institute Seminars provide health care practitioners with the tools to enhance not just their understanding, but their ability to transform patient care.
24-hour urinalysis is a critical diagnostic tool for health care practitioners. Unlike blood tests, which offer only a snapshot in time, urinalysis provides a dynamic look at how the body processes and eliminates nutrients over a full day. This allows practitioners to detect early signs of imbalance before they manifest in blood work.
As Dr. Loomis teaches, urinalysis reveals how the body retains or discards nutrients, offering unique insights into digestion, enzyme function, and organ health. By identifying the root causes of dysfunction, health care practitioners can craft more targeted, effective treatment plans. Dr. Loomis’ forward-thinking approach empowers practitioners to catch issues early, giving them the tools to create lasting health solutions for their patients.
By attending one Food Enzyme Institute seminar (online or in-person), we offer you urinalysis interpretations for your practice – free of charge! Our 24-hour urinalysis is done at certified laboratories in the United States and provides practitioners with an objective look into a patient’s 24-hour diet. We use the 24-hour urinalysis findings to determine a patient’s nutritional needs based on pathology, physical findings, and digestion tests!
Anytime any of the organ systems of the body are out of balance, there are signs & symptoms. Once they are identified, the treatment will be more obvious to you as a healthcare practitioner! This is not your average food journal. The Signs & Symptoms SurveyTM is the only questionnaire of its kind designed to identify dietary deficiencies of macronutrients, food enzymes, and coenzymes (vitamins and minerals!)

“Dr. Howard Loomis has been a fountain of amazing information and has provided me the opportunity to serve others at the highest levels of excellence. I say this as a Loomis Digestive Health Specialist and DABCI (Dipl Chiropractic Board of Internists). The foundations of his Source of Symptoms (SOS) visceral-somatic stress evaluation is the cornerstone of my practice. Being able to correlate a patient’s health history and symptom survey with a real time SOS exam guides my therapeutic plan to great results! Rooted in human physiologic responses to stress, his method of teaching the physiology is magnificent. I highly recommend learning Doc’s lifework at the Food Enzyme Institute.
The Food Enzyme Institute “…specializes in health care, not sick care. Our goal is to maintain the balance in the body that is necessary for optimal health through the use of diet and nutrition.” That is exactly what they teach. Additionally, over the decades of doing Doc’s work in my practice, I have always received excellent customer service at the institute. If you’re committed to helping your patients, take Seminar One and let your practice be motivated with how easy it is to determine a person’s source of stress.”
Respectfully,
Dr. Kent Christianson, DABCI, LDH
Turns out Hippocrates was right
“I completed the Food Enzyme Institute online introductory seminars and was very impressed. I came away with excellent information that I can use in my practice to assist my clients with better health.
It turns out Hippocrates was right when he said, ‘all dis-ease begins in the gut.’ I look forward to attending the seminars this summer!”

Jaclyn Touzard, Publisher of The American Chiropractor, had the privilege of attending what may be one of the final events curated by Dr. Howard Jr. With Dr. Loomis’ legacy now being carried forward by his team, led by Dr. Nick Gatto, Jaclyn reflects on the memorable experience.
After years of conflicting health information, especially culminating in 2020, attending Dr. Howard Loomis’ seminar felt essential. The last opportunity had been in 2002, and seeing him now—just over 80 years old—still sharp as a tack and actively engaged in educating health care practitioners and their patients on resolving chronic and acute health issues through the enzyme nutrition program he created over 20 years ago was impressive.
The seminar came with several unexpected highlights. This time, having the opportunity to bring my husband added a new dimension to the experience, with the introduction of a dedicated program for spouses, led by Dr. Dennis Frerking. Meanwhile, the main program gathered expert doctors for their annual meeting, with Dr. Nick Gatto delivering the curriculum authored by Dr. Loomis.
Being able to communicate directly with Dr. Loomis was quite a feather in my cap as the publisher of The American Chiropractor. The seminar’s format included patient examinations at the beginning of the weekend, complete with a thorough diagnostics report that highlighted areas needing support. Coming from a family of chiropractors and running a magazine for chiropractors, this approach really resonated. It reinforced the importance of “walking the talk” in the health field and embodying health by using one’s own medicine.
One particularly amazing experience was witnessing how my extremely low blood pressure—likely triggered just for the occasion—was immediately corrected by the techniques being taught. It started making me think of the body as a big pump, where walking serves a function similar to a well, moving things up and down to keep the body flowing. Although this concept wasn’t stated explicitly, it was one of the many insights that you naturally pick up during a weekend surrounded by excellent doctors, information, and programs.
A priceless takeaway from the weekend was seeing my husband, who grew up in a medically minded family, now sharing wisdom he learned from Dr. Dennis Frerking’s spouse program. One key lesson he repeated was the importance of identifying the “SOS”—the source of stress—before addressing health concerns. As parents of three children, this newfound perspective has already influenced how we discuss our children’s health issues.
Having Dr. Howard Loomis among the panel of experts is a tremendous asset, and engaging with his programs—whether in person or through increasingly available online options—offers invaluable resources. Despite changes in health education, Dr. Loomis has remained a reliable and steadfast source of information.
