GMOS AND FOOD ALLERGIES

Researchers estimate that up to 15 million Americans have food allergies. This potentially deadly condition affects one in every 13 children (under 18 years of age) in the United States. That's roughly two in every classroom. According to a study released in 2013 by the CDC, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011.1

Igrewupinthe 1980s,and no one in myfamily or any of my classmates had food allergies (or at least, none that I knew of). What is the cause of this dramatic increase in food allergies over the past 20 years?

I believe there are several factors that play into the increase of food allergies, such as increased:

• Subluxations

• Food enzyme deficiencies

• GMO foods

• Use of Roundup on GMO crops

With regard to the first two bullet points, getting regular chiropractic adjustments and using food enzyme supplements to replace those lost in the food supply allows the body to function normally.

The last two bullet points deal with the level of toxins being consistently forced into the body. With dysfunction and high levels of toxicity, can you understand howyour patients may have subclinical digestion and/ or immune system difficulties? Their body has a hard time processing foods due to this toxicity.

The biggest factor of all of these, in my opinion, is the increased use of Roundup®, specifically glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is the result of a laboratory process where the genome of an organism is altered by the insertion of one of more genes not normally found there. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals, or even humans.

Dr. Don Huber is recognized as a leading GMO expert.

He is an award-winning, internationally recognized scientist and an emeritus professor of plant pathology at Purdue University.

He states that the three things you need to know about GMOs are:

1. There are no peer-reviewed scientific papers establishing the safety of GMO crops.

2. Epidemiological patterns show there is an identical rise in over 30 human diseases correlated with our increased usage of glyphosate and the increased prevalence of genetically engineered proteins in our food.

3. Genetically engineered foods, as well as conventional crops that are heavily sprayed with glyphosate, have lower nutrient density than organic foods. They also contain high amounts of pesticides with documented harmful health effects, along with novel, highly allergenic proteins.2

The first time your patients walk into your clinic, how many even know what a GMO is? How many are making an effort to eat 100% organic? In the twenty-first century, it is harder for us to be healthy with the increased toxins in our food supply. If you are not engaging your patients in this conversation, the likelihood of them getting this information elsewhere is slim.

The bottom line is that GMO and farming practices (use of pesticides) are causing our food to be less nutritious, loaded with more toxins, and contain allergenic proteins that our body simply cannot digest and process. Then the body calls on our immune system to clean up the mess of weak digestion and the toxic load. This is where food allergies are coming from.

Good food choices and strong digestion are paramount for great overall health. Our digestion and immune systems are heavily dependent upon enzymes to do their job well. Adding food enzyme supplements to your patients' care plans can improve the results your doctor is getting with them.

The best way to encourage your patients to be healthier is to talk with them about GMOs and why it is important to buy organic, minimize the intake of GMO foods, get regular adjustments, and strengthen the digestion and immune system with food enzyme supplements.
