Intermittent fasting (IF), also referred to as timed restricted feeding (TRF), has gained popularity in recent years as a dietary strategy to improve health and wellness. Intermittent fasting involves the deliberate selection of hours of eating and hours of fasting. There are a variety of ways to divide up the eating window versus fasting time. Some of the most common methods include 16 hours fasting, 8 hours feeding; 18 hours fasting, 6 hours feeding; and even alternate days for fasting and feeding.

One of the primary benefits of intermittent fasting is weight loss. When we fast, our body is better able to burn stored fat for energy. This process may lead to a reduction in body weight and body fat percentage. Intermittent fasting has been shown to be just as effective as traditional calorie restriction diets for weight loss and anti-aging benefits.

Intermittent fasting also has been linked to improvements in insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control. When we fast, our body uses up stored glucose and begins to produce ketones, which can help improve insulin sensitivity. Intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and lower blood sugar levels, which can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

In addition to weight loss and improved blood sugar control, intermittent fasting has also been linked to other health benefits. Research has suggested that intermittent fasting can improve brain function, including memory and learning. It also may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which can play a role in many chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
