ICA Holds 98th Annual Convention - Evidence-Focused Event of Adjustment-Centric Chiropractic Care - Dr. Selina Sigafoose Jackson Reelected as ICA President
On April 11-13, 2024, the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) conducted its 98th Annual Convention in Dallas, Texas. The board of directors voted unanimously to reelect Dr. Brian Moriarty as secretary, Dr. Jon Stucky as treasurer, Dr. Joseph Betz as vice president, and Dr. Selina Sigafoose-Jackson for her fourth year as president.
Upon the reelection, Dr. Sigafoose-Jackson said, “It is not often that one can have the honor and privilege to serve with such distinguished gentlemen, but to be elected twice to this position is a rarity. At our annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, our board elected to allow the four of us to move forward as officers in the ICA. We have worked together seamlessly in the past, and I look forward to another year of serving our profession through the ICA. My goal is to make this a year to remember. Our goal is, without wavering, to promote, protect, and serve. Each of these gentlemen emulates a part of principle number 11. They ‘are unswerving and unadapted and have no solicitude for the structures in which they work.’ I am proud to work among them and call them friends.”
“Serving Those Who Served” was the convention’s theme. Many presentations throughout the event focused on the unique needs of those who serve or have served in the military and their families. Dr. Charmaine Herman set the tone for the convention with her presentation on “Cultural Competence for the Chiropractor.” One ICA member noted to event staff that it was the “best and most balanced presentation on diversity and inclusion [he] had ever experienced.”
Dr. Edwin Cordero energized attendees Saturday morning with his leadership presentation. Representing 74 chiropractors who are military spouses was Katherine Phillips, DC, DACNB. Former Army Ranger Tony Brooks, DC, shared his experiences in military service as detailed in his book, Leave No Man Behind, with suggestions on caring for veterans. Life University’s Stephanie Sullivan, DC, PhD, reported on the current state of our veteran-focused research collaboration, which will include national surveys of chiropractors and veterans and post-survey research. The data she presented underscored why the chiropractic community must take a leading role going forward on non-drug options for care for veterans and future generations who have been indoctrinated with “better living through drugs” propaganda.
From our international community, Australia’s Navine Haworth, PhD, FAICE, DICCP, GCTTL, DC, presented on evidence-based chiropractic from the international perspective with a case focus on pediatric chiropractic care and continuing education curriculum.
From Canada, James Chestnut, DC, CCWP, walked the audience through evidence that makes it clear that adjustment-centric, healthy-chiropractic-lifestyle supported care is the most evidence-based, most effective, and safest option for noncancerous, noninfectious, nontraumatic instability spinal and spine-related health care. Drawing from Stephenson, Dr. Chestnut reminded the audience of the two causes of loss of health — dis-ease and deficit. He explained further that the body cannot produce some essential nutrients necessary for self-regulating, self-healing (innate), and optimal performance.
Woven throughout the event were veterans sharing their stories and perspectives on optimal communication strategies, including ICA’s own Dr. John Maltby, II and Dr. Kristen Welsh, as well as Parker University’s Floyd McLendon, Jr. Rounding out the event were ICA Director of Development Luis A. Vega, MBA, MPM, USNR Rear Admiral (Ret); Founder and CEO of Aegis Industries Kenneth Stethem, a Navy veteran; The New York Times bestselling author and Marine Corps veteran Dannion Brinkley; and former Director of the Selective Service and Marine Corps Veterans, the Honorable William A. Chatfield.
“As the ICA approaches our centennial year in 2026, we are focused on making sure the ICA continues to fulfill the mandate left to us by our founder, Dr. B. J. Palmer,” ICA’s Executive Director/CEO Beth Clay said. “To guard the sacred trust and continue to lead the profession in promoting chiropractic as a separate and distinct nondrug profession. I am excited to continue to work with Dr. Selina Sigafoose-Jackson as she continues as ICA president, leading our board in their development of a strategic focus for the ICA’s next century.”
