"Your Vision for the Future " was the theme of Breakthrough Coaching's springtime seminar in midtown Manhattan, and TAC s Editor, Jaclyn Busch Touzard, took notes! Read Jaclyn s impressions of the event on page 40. But first, in an interview with The American Chiropractor (TAC) below. Dr. Mark Sanna discusses the vision for the future of chiropractic that inspired him to develop this unique team approach to practice development known as Breakthrough Coaching. TA C: Please give our readers some background information on the Breakthrough Coaching Seminars. Sanna: I began my Breakthrough Coaching experience as a client. Having grown up in the profession, as a second-generation chiropractor, my goal from a very young age was to become a practice management consultant. With this goal in mind, I became a student of professional practice managers. I was a client of most of the recognized brand name practice management programs, and attending professional development seminars enabled me to learn what I would and wouldn't like to include when I formed my own management company. 1 wanted a coach who was current with practice today and not one who kept rehashing the same old concepts from the 1970's and 80's. Most importantly, I wanted a coach who was proactive, one who phoned me with answers and not questions. I wanted a coach who contacted me, and not one that I had to contact when I had a cliallenge or when my practice statistics dropped off. I wanted a coach that provided me with a step-by-step plan of action for the success of my practice, and not a consultant who provided seminars that were not based on a coherent, understandable system. I got sick and tired of having to rush to the back of the seminar room to buy the latest video or cassette series, only to have my practice constantly veer off in different directions as I sought the next new thing. Breakthrough Coaching, today, has its roots in my years of researching practice management programs. Accountability is the difference between a consultant and a coach. A coach holds you accountable for taking the action steps that lead to success. Breakthrough Coaching has its foundation in the concept of accountability. After several years as a client of Breakthrough Coaching and achieving success in practice, the company hired me as a professional coach. Three years later, like the Remington Razor guy, I liked it so much I bought the company! Since I acquired the company, in 1998, its membership has quadrupled, and we now employ a nationwide team of sixteen professional coaches who have the first-hand experience and skills necessary to run a successful practice today. I'm especially proud of the fact that the American Chiropractic Association has endorsed the Breakthrough Coaching chiropractic practice management . program. TAC: What is the ultimate goal and purpose of this program? Sanna: The ultimate goal of the Breakthrough Coaching program is to effectively enable chiropractors to participate in the mainstream of healthcare and healthcare reimbursement, with a predictable, system-driven approach to practice procedures, protocols, and management. The Breakthrough Coaching system focuses on progression of active care, upgraded diagnostic capabilities that include objectively assessing the outcomes of care, and the documentation of patients' functional capabilities. TAC: What kind of results have doctors witnessed through applying the information presented in this program in their chiropractic clinics? Sanna: Breakthrough Coaching Members are consistently among the highest earners in their profes- sional communities. They report increased income, decreased stress, and more free time to pursue those activities that they enjoy the most. We've created a community of successful practitioners, who freely share their experiences and support each other. Family is the company's highest value, and a focus on family infuses every aspect of the program. Members often remark on the deep sense of belonging to the family of chiropractic that their membership has brought them. TA C: Do chiropractors have to be of any specific philosophy in order to appreciate the information presented in this program? Sanna: Our members come from every philosophical background and technique. The company focuses on the business.of chiropractic with a deep appreciation and WHAT'S UP, DOC? Having lectured internationally for the last 20-plus years, I have acquired a taste for enthusiastic, polished and well-organized presentations. Updated pertinent information relative to the rapid changing chiropractic practice, such as federal guidelines, rules, requirements, coding and billing, etc. are essential ingredients for a successful practice. Dr. Mark Sanna and his well-trained, ethical and professional Breakthrough Coaching staff have succeeded in developing a Team of Speaker Superstars and personal one-on-one coaches. With the mastery of innovative and entrepreneurial skills in management and marketing, Dr. Sanna is determined to enhance the profession, conveying instilled thoughts with experienced words of wisdom, time tested and proven duplicable. The Manhattan experience was fulfilling because of the TEAM and camaraderie displayed, i.e., sincere and successful DCs aiding one another with the same goals in mind, without egos comparing income and stats, but rather by supporting each others' dreams with implementation strategies necessary to accomplish such. Whether you are new in practice, solo or multidisciplinary, the BTC TEAM led by Dr. Mark Sanna, will afford you the opportunity to increase your practice multifold. As in any sport, the champions are always directed by a great coach and staff teaching the players how to successfully implement upgraded strategies. Dr. Mitch Mally Davenport, 1A respect for the history of the profession. Our philosophy is that every chiropractor deserves to be rewarded with financial af-fluence. It is by creating affluent chiropractors that chiropractic will be recognized in its rightful role as the single most sensible form of health care available. When chiropractors are financially secure, they are more willing to dip into their bank accounts and support their state and local organizations and educational institutions. ()nly by supporting a concerted effort will chiropractors impact legislation and reimbursement in a way that will assure the long-term vitality of our profession. EZQ COMMENTARY Breakthrough Focuses on "Living a Life of Balance" I met Dr. Mark Sanna several years ago and, having worked with him since that time on editorial contributions to TAC, I know, personally, that Mark is very organized, thorough, responsible and a first class businessman. I'd heard from others in the profession that the Breakthrough Coaching seminars are comprehensive in nature, covering hands-on information chiropractors can use in their clinics for such things as coding and compliance, business management, etc., and / wanted to learn more; so when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance to attend a Breakthrough Coaching seminar in Manhatten. I arrived in New York City Thursday afternoon, May 16, 2002, and classes began that evening from 6:30- 9:00 PM, with a thought-provoking philosophy session directed by Mr. Mark Reisenberg, owner and founder of Human Resources Unlimited, on "The Three Divine Questions of Life". The following two days of the seminar featured more classes scheduled comfortably from 9:00 AM to about 5 or 6 PM each day, with 2-hour lunch breaks (to encourage the attendees to get out and see some of New York City). Dr. Sanna even provided attendees with nice little tourist packets, including his tips on safe transportation and a list of his ten favorite tourist areas in NYC. What a guy! My favorite thing about the seminar was the wide variety of topics covered in such a short time period. Each lecture covered a different topic, from X-ray analysis (radiology) taught by the very well known Dr. Terry Yochum, to more philosophically oriented information presented by Dr. John Demartini. In addition, Bill Esteb of Patient Media, Inc., was on hand to offer doctors some excellent patient education tips; and among Dr. Sanna's own Breakthrough Coaching team, Kathy Mills provided useful coding and compliance information, Drs. Jeff Lewin, Paul Basile, and Brent Ungar presented great management procedures and strategies. And, finally, Dr. Sanna's closing of the seminar with the "Live Your Vision" message is very powerful and inspiring... especially since this information comes from someone like Mark, who you know IS LIVING HIS VISION. The weekend culminated on Saturday evening after classes ended, when all attendees had an opportunity to participate in a World Yacht Dinner Cruise to enjoy the sunset transformation of the New York City skyline. What a really wonderful way to site-see, as well as to mingle with the other chiropractors attending the seminar. Definitely a fantastic experience, and a memorable finish for a super weekend! In keeping with Dr. Mark Sanna's "success tips" on living a life of balance, I thought this seminar experience reflected the principle of balance perfectly.
