Navigating Detox Safely: Protocols and Best Practices

Q: What are the risks of an improper detox?

JG: Detoxing improperly can lead to a lot of issues. If the body isn’t prepared, releasing toxins into the bloodstream without clear elimination routes can lead to severe detox symptoms and stress on the liver and kidneys. Aggressive detox symptoms, commonly called Herxheimer reactions, are fatigue, headaches, brain fog, rashes, or even exacerbated inflammation. Detoxification needs to be done in a slow, step-by-step manner.

Q: Why is a structured detox approach so important?

JG: A structured detox sequence ensures that toxins are safely processed and eliminated. We always recommend starting with an intestinal cleanse because the intestinal tract is the primary way that toxins enter the body and the primary way they are eliminated. If your intestinal elimination route is blocked or inflamed, toxins can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream, worsening health issues.

After the intestines, we focus on the liver, the body’s primary detox organ. Only after the liver is functioning well do we address parasites and, finally, heavy metals. This order ensures that the elimination routes are clear and the liver is functioning well so the body can handle the detoxification of parasites and heavy metals. When addressing parasites and heavy metals, symptoms of detoxification are common, but this can be mitigated by making sure the intestines are clear and the liver can process these toxins.

Q: How does detoxing impact sensitive populations, like people with autoimmune conditions?

JG: People with autoimmune diseases or other chronic conditions must be especially cautious. Their bodies are often already burdened with inflammation and compromised organ function. A gradual and methodical approach is crucial.

For these individuals, we emphasize gentle detox methods and longer preparation phases. It’s also important to monitor reactions and adjust the protocol as needed to avoid triggering autoimmune flare-ups or additional stress on the system. It is extremely important for autoimmune patients to do a full-body detoxification and fasting, but it should be with a gentle and slow approach. Water-only fasting alone can do wonders for autoimmune conditions, but it usually takes at least 72 hours of fasting followed by intermittent fasting.

Q: What are some best practices for a safe detox?

JG: First, never rush the process. Start with an intestinal cleanse and focus on hydration to support elimination. Use gentle, natural intestinal cleansers like Oxy-Powder or activated charcoal and natural fiber from fruits and vegetables, especially things like fresh organic broccoli sprouts, to help bind and remove toxins.

Once the intestinal track is clear, move on to liver support, using herbs like milk thistle, turmeric, dandelion root, and ginger. Always remember to detox in the right order: intestines, liver, parasites, and heavy metals. If you experience intense symptoms, slow down or seek guidance from your chiropractor or trusted healthcare provider.

Q: How often should someone detox?

JG: Intestinal cleansing should be done at least quarterly. Most people have five to10 pounds of compacted, fermented, and putrefied fecal material interfering with their health and absorption of nutrition.

Liver cleansing should be done at least twice a year, possibly quarterly, depending on your health. Most people have livers that are not functioning over 20%. Harmful organism/parasite and heavy metal cleansing should be done twice a year.
